Shooting Locations:  Many Southern Utah and Northern Arizona locations

My Shooting Bio:  I've spent much of my adult life living in Utah, more than five years living in the  southern Utah city of St. George.  I've had covers of a number of regional magazines, including St. George Magazine and Arizona Wildlife Views, and hundreds of images published in other magazines, newspapers, in calendars, etc from my photography in these areas.  It would be hard to estimate how many days I've spent in the field shooting in southern Utah, maybe a thousand.  I know the regional national parks - like Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon - as well as lesser know monuments like Grand Staircase-Escalante and even the state parks like Snow Canyon.  I have driven the back roads of the Arizona Strip, Kiabab Plateau, Beaver Dam Mountains, and hundreds of miles in local BLM lands and Dixie National Forest.  In the past year I have taught seminars throughout California (22 different cities) and led 14 workshops and safaris all over the American West.  Each trip is different and will go where the colors and wildlife are best.

Safari

Autumn in southern Utah is truly spectacular.  Rocky Mountain Maples and Gambel's Oak are wrapped in blazing colors.  Both mule deer and desert bighorn sheep are in the rut - and more visible in these scenic areas than at any other time.  Also, many different songbirds have come into this area to escape the colder temperatures farther north.  The amazing red rock country and its rock canyons, monoliths, and hoodoos are all within close range.  This safari is a true mix of wildlife and landscape photography - there is a lot of beautiful subjects for everyone here - no matter your preference.

We meet in Springdale, Utah just outside the southwest entrance to Zion Park, just past the towns of Virgin and Rockville on Sunday night, November 1st.  It is about a 2.5 hour drive from Las Vegas up I-15, past St. George, then down Highway 9 through Hurricane and La Verkin.  We depart each morning before dawn to be in our chosen location for sunrise photography.  We do a lot of driving and so when we are carpooling we split gas expenses.  I have a couple of rooms reserved at the Zion Park Motel in Springdale but I would suggest getting your own room if you are traveling with another person – their number is 435-772-3251.   If you are alone and would like to share a room with another safari attendee then the costs are split equally.  The cost of meals is typical in a tourist area, being a bit higher than normal, but there are good restaurants in Springdale and in the general area..

Philosophy

While I'm a wildlife photographer first, and a scenic photographer second - this safari is truly a mix of both.  My Nikon 500mm F4 lens, as well as all my equipment and lenses, will be available for safari participants to use as opportunities arise.  Bring all your camera equipment.  Opportunities for wildlife photography generally require your longest lens for the safety of the animals and the photographer.  Great landscape photography requires wide-angle lenses and small f-stops to capture all the detail in dramatic scenes.  A tripod is also a necessary accessory, especially in the morning and evening hours when low light requires longer shutter-speeds.  I suggest bringing layered clothing, shooting gloves, camera equipment, tripod, hat, weather slicker for you and your equipment in case of rain or snow.  Depending upon your camera and how you shoot images (Raw vs. JPG’s) bring at least 16 gig of compact flash cards or other media.  Bring your laptop or a portable hard-drive if you feel you might need to download cards while shooting.  Personally, I use the Epson P-series of portable hard-drives to download my CF cards as I'm shooting.

Deposit and Conditions

Full payment is due by October 17th, 2009.  I accept major credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express - and of course, checks.  Please don't e-mail me credit card information - just call and we will handle it over the phone.  There is no additional fees if your wife and/or husband accompanies you and they are not photographers.  You are responsible for your own safety, travel, hotel accommodations, and food.  It is clearly understood that outdoor nature photography has inherent risks and that those risks are borne by the participants.  Your deposit for this photography safari constitutes your acceptance of these conditions.

I make every effort to provide a great photographic experience for everyone.  Getting up early and staying out until dark is part of great nature photography.  Rain, snow, or sun - hot or cold - we get out and search for great photographic opportunities.  Each night at dinner we will visit about the day's events and plan strategy for the following day.  I have two-way radios for talking between vehicles and know where all the restrooms are (hey, that's important info...).  Look through my galleries to see the type of stuff I shoot and join me if you feel like you will not only learn important professional nature photography techniques - but have great experiences as well.

If you would like to request more information, feel free to call me directly or e-mail me below.  If you would like to join this photo safari, call today as space is limited.
